David Walker - Now in his twenty-first year of teaching Yoga, David Walker began his journey with Yoga in 1974 at the age of fourteen when he was intoduced to the practice through his brother. Curious dabbling ensued until his mid-twenties when David began studying the Iyengar Method through the Yoga Center of Portland, and then at Kripalu in Lenox, Massachusetts, where he became certified to teach in 1990. David graduated from the University of Maine in 1984 with a double major in Journalism and Philosphy, and worked as an editor and writer. David founded the Blue Hill Center for Yoga in 1990. In 1993 David gained certification in Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy. Along the way a period of immersion in the Bikram method helped purify and build strength, which led to further studies in Astanga with Beryl Bender Birch. The Anusara method has also been a strong influence on David's teachings. In 1987 David received shaktipat, an ancient ritualized transmission of shakti, from Asha Ma, the spritual heir to Dhyan Yogi. David's teaching style is an exciting blend of various disciples, and is strongly rooted in the Iyengar Method, through his studies with Patricia Walden, Gabriel Halpern, Francois Raoult, and Kofi Busia, among others. Along the way, David has developed his own style which incorporates isometric resistance. David's love of the full range of asanas, mantra, and yoga philosophy makes his teaching rich and fun.

| David Walker was a revelation to me when I first discovered him teaching at the Blue Hill Center for Wellness in 2004. Although I had the great good luck to study with many brilliant teachers while I lived in New York City, David’s expertise in asana practice surpasses almost all of them. At the beginning, although I was only one of many in his class, he immediately connected deftly to my individual strengths and weaknesses and managed to make me feel as if his teachings were directed solely to me. David is unrestricted by the typical yoga labels such as Iyengar or Bikram or Kripalu. He deftly draws from all of those traditions as well as many other yoga styles to create his own unique interpretation with careful, deliberate and intelligent anatomical thought. He consistently makes me aware of my potential within the practice of yoga and, even now, he re-energizes my love for yoga with each successive class I take from him. David Walker is an incredible resource for the aspiring yogi and, quite simply, the best teacher you can find in Downeast Maine. |
